રોહન આજે ઓફિસે થી જલ્દી ઘરે પહોંચ્યો. આઠમા માળે લિફ્ટમાં જવાને બદલે આજે વળી એ સીડીથી ઉપર જવા લાગ્યો, એ પણ ઘણી ઝડપથી. આજે તેમાં એક અલગ જ ઉત્સાહ અને આંનદ દેખાતો હતો. એટલે જ તો આખા દિવસના થાક અને બંને હાથમાં સામાન હોવા છતાં સડસડાટ સીડીઓ ચડી તે આઠમે માળ પહોંચ્યો. બેલ વગાડી તો અંદરથી શાલીની એ દરવાજો ખોલ્યો અને રોહનને જલ્દી જોઇને તેને થોડું આશ્ચર્ય પણ થયું. રોહન પરસેવે તરબતર હતો અને હાંફી ગયેલો હતો. છતાં પણ તે શાલીનીને કંઈ કેહવા માંગતો હતો, તે સામાન વિશે જે તે લાવ્યો હતો. શાલીનીએ તેને પાણી લાવી આપ્યું અને બે મિનિટ આરામ કરવા કહ્યું.

બે મિનિટ બાદ રોહન સ્વસ્થ થઈને શાલીનીને પોતે લાવેલા સામાનમાંથી એક પછી એક વસ્તુ કાઢી દેખાડવા લાગ્યો . આ સામાન હતો તેમના આવનારા સંતાન માટે. શાલીની પોતાના પતિના ચેહરા પર પિતા બનવાની ખુશી અત્યારથી જ અનુભવી રહી હતી. તેણે સામાન તરફ ધ્યાન આપ્યું તો તેને તેમાં કઇંક અજુગતુ લાગ્યું. તેમાં ફક્ત એક બેબીગર્લ માટેની જ વસ્તુઓ હતી. તેમાં બેબીગર્લના કપડા, બાર્બી ડોલ, સેન્ડલ અને અન્ય ઘણી વસ્તુ હતી. શાલીની અને રોહન બંને પોતાના આવનાર સંતાન વિશે ઘણા ઉત્સુક હતા. પરંતુ, તેને એ નહોતું સમજાય રહ્યું કે રોહનને શું થયું છે? વળી તે અત્યારથી બેબીગર્લ માટેનો સામાન લઈને આવ્યો છે. જયારે કે આવનાર સંતાન છોકરો હશે કે છોકરી તે તો ભગવાનની ઈચ્છા અનુસાર જ મળશે.

શાલીની એ રોહનને કીધું કે, “રોહન હજુ બાળકના જન્મ માટે ઘણો સમય બાકી છે અને તું અત્યારથી જ આટલો બધો સામાન લઈને આવ્યો અને એ પણ બેબીગર્લ માટેનો સામાન તને કેવી રીતે ખબર કે બાળકી જ જન્મશે?” રોહન ફક્ત તે સામાન ફરી ભરવાના કામમાં વ્યસ્ત થઇ ગયો. જયારે શાલીનીએ આ વાત પોતાની સાસુ જોડે કરી ત્યારે તેમના જવાબથી શાલીનીને વધુ આશ્ચર્ય થયું. તેને તેની સાસુ એ કીધું કે, “મારા પુત્રની ઈચ્છા મારી ઈચ્છા સાથે ઘણી મેળ ખાય છે. હું પણ ઈચ્છીશ કે એક નાની ઢીંગલી મારા ખોળામાં રમે.” આ જવાબથી શાલીનીની મૂંઝવણ વધી ગઈ. આજના આ કળયુગમાં જયારે લોકો બાળકીઓના જન્મને ટૂંકાવી નાખે છે અથવા કચવાતા મને પોતાને જે સંતાન મળે તેનાથી ખુશ રહે છે. પરંતુ, અહીં વાત કંઇક અલગ જ હતી કોઈ સાસુ અને પતિ બાળકી જ ઝંખે એવું તે માનવા તૈયાર નહોતી. તેને ખુશી તો હતી કે જો બાળકીનો જન્મ થશે તો રોહન અને તેની સાસુની ખુશી બમણી થશે.

શાલીનીએ અમુક દિવસ એમ જ પસાર કર્યા પરતું રોહન તો રોજ કંઇકને કંઇક પોતાને ત્યાં બાળકી જ આવશે તેમ માની તેની માટે સામાન લાવતો જ હતો. એક દિવસ શાલીની એ ફરી એ જ બાળકી વાળો પ્રશ્ન પૂછ્યો. જયારે રોહને કંઈ જવાબ ન આપ્યો શાલીની જીદ કરવા લાગી. શાલીનીના ઘણા આગ્રહ બાદ તેણે પોતાની પ્રથમ સંતાન પુત્રી જ કેમ? તે અંગે ના રહસ્ય પરથી પરદો ઊંચક્યો. રોહને જણાવ્યું કે, મારી માતા જયારે પ્રથમ વાર માં બનવા હતા ત્યારે તેમના પૂર્વ પતિ અને સાસુએ સોનોગ્રાફી થકી બાળકી હોવાનું જાણ્યું હતું. તે લોકોએ તેની માતાને ગર્ભ પડાવવા દબાણ કર્યું અને ગર્ભપાત કરાવી નાખ્યો. તેમના દ્વારા મળેલા આ ઘાવને કારણે તેની માતાને ઘણું સહન કરવું પડ્યું હતું. મારી માતાએ તેમને છોડી બીજા લગ્ન કર્યા, પૂર્વ પતિ અને તેના પરિવારજનો વિરુદ્ધ પગલા લે તે પહેલા જ તેઓ બધા એક અકસ્માતનો ભોગ બન્યા હતા. મારી માતા આગળ જતા એક એન.જી.ઓ.ના સંપર્કમાં આવી જે ‘સ્ત્રીભ્રુણ હત્યા’ વિરુદ્ધ અવાજ ઉઠાવતી હતી. હું પણ મારી માતા સાથે જ એ એન.જી.ઓ.માં કામ કરતો હતો. એ સમય દરમ્યાન મેં અને એન.જી.ઓ.એ સાથે મળીને ઘણા કૌભાંડોને ઉઘાડા પાડ્યા અને કેટલાય લોકોને જેલ મોકલવામાં સફળતા મેળવી. પરંતુ, જયારે પણ આવું કાર્ય કરતા ત્યારે જે-તે ક્લીનીક કે હોસ્પીટલમાં બાળકીના ભ્રુણ જોઇને મારું હ્રદય કંપી જતું. આ જ કારણે હું પ્રથમ સંતાન તરીકે બાળકી ઈચ્છું છું અને એક બાળકીનો પિતા બની ગર્વ લેવા માંગુ છું.

રોહનના જીવનની આ કથા સાંભળી શાલીનીની આંખોમાં અશ્રુધારાઓ વેહવા લાગી. તેને દુખ તો થયું સાથે પોતાના પતિ અને સાસુના આટલા પીડાદાયક ભૂતકાળ અને તેમના દ્વારા કરેલા સારા કાર્યોની જાણ કેમ એને ના થઇ એનો પ્રશ્ન પણ થયો. રોહન અને શાલીનીના પ્રેમલગ્ન હતા. રોહન કે તેની માતા પોતાનું ભૂતકાળ શાલીનીને બતાવી પોતાની ખરાબ યાદો તાજી નહોતા કરવા માંગતા અને સાથે જ સારા કાર્યોનો જશ પણ લેવો નહોતો. રોહન અને શાલીની બંને હવે બાળકી જ જન્મે તે આશા સાથે તે સમયની રાહ જોઇ રહ્યા હતા. રોહન પણ શાલીનીને ગર્ભાવસ્થામાં ખુશ  રાખતો અને નિયમિત ડોક્ટર પાસે લઇ જતો. એક દિવસ રોહન ઓફિસે જવા ન નીકળ્યો એટલે શાલીની એ પૂછ્યું,

“રોહન તું આજે ઓફિસે કેમ ના ગયો?”

રોહન:- “અરે તું ભૂલી ગઈ કે આજે નીતા પાસે જવાનું છે, સાંજે સાત વાગ્યાની અપોઇન્મેન્ટ છે.”

નીતા અને શાલીની વચ્ચે બાળપણથી જ ગાઢ મિત્રતા હતી. નીતા એક જાણીતી હોસ્પિટલમાં ગાયનેકૉલૉજીસ્ટ હતી. તે જ કારણે તેઓ બંન્ને તેની પાસે જ નિયમિત ચેક-અપ માટે જતા હતા.

થોડીવાર કંઈ વિચારી રોહન બોલ્યો, ” શાલીની જીવનમાં કેવા-કેવા સંયોગો જોવા મળે છે નહિ……?”

” કેમ શું થયું? અને વળી ક્યા સંયોગોની તું વાત કરે છે? ”

” જો આ જુલાઈનો મહિનો છે સાતમી તારીખ છે અને ગર્ભકાળનો પણ સાતમો મહિનો જ ચાલે છે આ ઉપરાંત, નીતાને પણ આજે સાત વાગ્યે જ તો મળવા જવાનું છે. આને સંયોગ ના કેવાય? અને એ પણ વળી સાતના આંકડાનો વિચિત્ર સંયોગ છે.”

સાંજે બંન્ને સાડા છ વાગ્યે તેઓ હોસ્પિટલ જવા ઘરેથી પોતાની કારમાં નીકળે છે. રસ્તામાં તેઓ બન્ને ઘણા ખુશ હોય છે અને ઘણી વાતો કરતાં – કરતાં જતા હોય છે. ત્યારે જ એક સ્પીડમાં આવતી કાર તેઓની ગાડીને ટક્કર મારીને ફંગોળાય છે. અકસ્માતમાં રોહનને ઘણી ઈજા થઇ હતી. પરંતુ, શાલીનીને તેનાથી વધુ ઈજા થઇ હતી. શાલીની બેભાન થઇ ગઈ હતી. રોહન રાહદારીઓની મદદ વડે શાલીનીને હોસ્પિટલ લઈ ગયો. પોતાની પાટાપીંડી કરાવી રોહન જયારે શાલીનીને જોવા ગયો ત્યારે તેને નીતાએ જાણ કરી કે, “શાલીનીના ગર્ભમાં રહેલ બાળકનું મૃત્યુ થયું છે તથા શાલીની કોમામાં સરી ગઈ છે.” રોહનને આ જાણ થતા તે ભાંગી પડ્યો. તેના પ્રથમ સંતાનની તેણે કેટલીય વાતો વિચારી રાખી હતી. રોહનને નીતાએ સાંત્વના આપી અને તેણે શાલીની કોમામાંથી બહાર આવશે ત્યારે આ સમાચાર તેને કઈ રીતે આપવા તે અંગે વિચારવા કહ્યું. નીતા પોતે જાણતી હતી કે, શાલીનીથી આ આઘાત સહન નહિ થાય અને બને તો આ સમાચાર તેને ના પડે તો જ સારું. પરંતુ, એ કઈ રીતે શક્ય છે? એ તેને સમજાતું નહોતું.

અમુક સમયબાદ રોહનને ખબર મળી કે જે ગાડી સાથે અકસ્માત થયો હતો તે ગાડીમાં જતા દંપતીનું મૃત્યુ થયું હતું . જયારે નીતાને રોહને આ વાત પૂછી ત્યારે રોહનને એ જાણ થઇ કે તે જ દંપતીની બાળકી કે જેના જન્મને દસ જ દિવસ થયા હશે તેનો ચમત્કારીક રીતે બચાવ થયો હતો. બાળકીને સારવાર માટે તે જ હોસ્પિટલમાં રાખી હતી. નીતા અને રોહનને અમુક દિવસ પછી એ માહિતી મળી કે તે દંપતીની લાશનો કબજો લેવા કે બાળકીની ખબર પૂછવા કોઈ આવ્યું જ નથી. રોહને અમુક મિત્રોની મદદથી એ દંપતીના અંતિમ-સંસ્કાર કરાવડાવ્યા. બીજી તરફ નીતાએ રોહનને તે બાળકી દત્તક લેવાનો પ્રસ્તાવ મુક્યો અને સાથે જ તેણે તેના હાથમાં અમુક કાગળ સહી કરવા આપી દીધા. જાણે કે નીતાને પેહલાથી જ ખબર હતી કે રોહન ના નહિં પાડે. રોહને નીતાની વાતનો સ્વીકાર કરી તે કાગળો પર સહી કરી આપી. શાલીનીને બાળકી દત્તક લીધાના દસ દિવસ પછી હોશ આવ્યો. તેણે રોહનને પ્રથમ પ્રશ્ન પોતાના પ્રથમ સંતાનનું શું થયું ? તેવો કર્યો. રોહને દત્તક લીધેલ બાળકી તેને ખોળે આપતા કહ્યું કે,

“આની દાદીએ તેનું નામ દિવ્યા રાખ્યું છે. પરંતુ, તું તો તેને પ્રેમથી જે બોલાવવું હોય તે બોલાવી શકે છે ”

શાલીનીએ હસતા મોઢે પોતાની દિકરીને “પરી” કહી તેને હુલામણું નામ આપ્યું. શાલીનીને ઘરે જવાની રજા મળ્યા બાદ તેઓ પોતાની આ પરી સાથે પોતાના ઘરે પાછા ફર્યા. શાલીનીને રોહનની આંખોમાં બાળકીની ઝંખના સંતોષાયાની ભાવના નજરે પડતી હતી. પરંતુ, શાલીનીને તે ક્યાં ખબર હતી કે રોહને તેની આ ખુશી માટે શું કર્યું હતું.
