‘A woman is the cement that keeps her family together and her love lasts a lifetime’- Mother Teresa.

On 28 December 2017, the Lok Sabha passed The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017. Triple Talaq is a custom which was practiced in the pre – Islamic era in which women used to get divorced by just uttering three letters Talaq Talaq Talaq. This custom is criticized for being unilateral and biased against women and is banned in 22 countries of the world.

India is home to the world’s third largest Muslim population in which 90 Million accounts for women only, and it is governed by the Sharia or Islamic jurisprudence.

When we talk about the present scenario in India where women are breaking the barriers and stereotypes of the society by holding the flag of ‘women empowerment’ high in the sky, and this social evil is blocking the basic fundamental Rights of the women.

A relationship of marriage is between two people, husband and wife, and no one has the right to make a decision of splitting which is based on one side consent. Remembering the movie Nikaah, which is based on Triple talaq, in which Salma Agha said that ‘she is not a paper note that can be given away in charity’.

Imagine living with the mental insecurity that three words can end your marital alliance. That is exactly how 65.9% of Muslim women feel in India. And that is the situation where the Liberty and Equality are questioned.

The roots for any relation must be strong. Like how a tree stands strong not by its fruits or branches, but by the depth of its roots. It takes a lot of time and efforts to build a relationship of trust, love, support and respect. In India where a girl has to leave her parents home in order to spend the married life with her husband, how is it fair for a man to destroy the life of a woman with the utterance of three words out of arrogance, anger and ego? Also, there is a ‘taboo’ in India of marrying a divorced women which is again unislamic, that results in young girls being condemned to live their life like virtual widows who are not getting married again. In the end, something that is considered as the ‘Wedding Bells’ turns out to be ‘Wedding Hells’ for a woman.

In case of Triple Talaq once given, the husband has to wait for three months.
This is when you have to know about the triple talaq . The triple talaq doesn’t mean saying or messaging (via whatsapp, Skype, mail or sms), ‘talaq’ three times and that is enough to end a marriage. Rather it means the person has to wait for a period of three months. Within the stipulated time and if there is change in mind or the concerned problem is resolved mutually, they sure can continue the marriage.

If a women herself wants to eradicate this social evil of society, it is time to become self independent, and this self independence will come only when she is educated enough to learn or at least be aware of the basic Rights of the Constitution.

Let us join our hands and work towards a country where men and women, as individuals, have equal rights, not just in the pages of Constitution, but in reality as well.

Men need to be taught to be thankful and say ‘Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!’ instead of ‘Talaq Talaq Talaq’, to make sure no woman goes to sleep feeling insecure.
