સવાર સવારમાં ઘરવાળા બધા દેકારો કરતા હતા, “તું ક્યારેય કોઈ પણ કામ સમય પર કરીશ જ નહિ, તને કામ સોંપવા કરતા અમે જાતે જ કરી લઈશું હવેથી”. મને શાંતિથી ઉઠીને બ્રશ પણ કરવા ન દીધું. મને થયું આ લોકો વધારે ટોણા મારે એ પેહલા હું કામે લાગી જાવ. ફટાફટ ફોન હાથમાં લીધો અને લિસ્ટમાં જેમના નામ હતા એ બધાને ફોન કરવા લાગ્યો. બહુ મોટું ફંક્શન ન હોવાથી અમુક સીમિત લોકોને જ આમંત્રણ આપવાનું હતું. આમ તો કાર્ડ પોસ્ટ થઇ ચુક્યા હતા, છતાં દરેક વ્યક્તિને આમંત્રણ મળી ગયું કે નહિ એની ખાતરી કરી લેવી સારી. કામ પતાવી હું આરામ થી સોફા પર બેઠો. પણ આટલું ઓછું હોય તેમ મમ્મી કહે, “બેટા તું થાકી ગયો હોઈશ, કંઈ નાસ્તો પાણી લઈશ ?”. મેં કીધું, “નેકી ઔર પુછ પુછ?” પછી સામે સરસ જવાબ મળ્યો, “ખાઈ લે, ખાઈ લે, આમ પણ સગાઇમાં ખાવા નહિ મળે, કેમ કે તારે જ બધા લોકોનું જમવાનું બનાવું પડશે”. બસ આટલું ઘણું હતું મને યાદ આવી ગયું કે મેં હજુ સુધી રસોયાને ફોન જ નથી કર્યો. ચૂપચાપ ફોન હાથમાં લઇ હું એક બાજુ ચાલ્યો ગયો.

આમ તો જોકે બહુ મોટી સમસ્યા ન હતી, મારો એક મિત્ર કેટરિંગમાં જ જોડાયેલો હતો. મારે માત્ર ફોન કરી એને એડ્રેસ જ આપવાનું હતું . ફોનમાં એમનો નંબર ગોત્યો અને કોલ કર્યો, “હા મહેશ, આપણે મિતાની સગાઇ માટે તારે જમણવારની વ્યવસ્થા સાંભળવાની છે, એડ્રેસ તને ટેક્સ્ટ કરી આપુ છું. વાનગીઓની જાણકારી તો મેં તને કરેલી જ છે, અને હા તારે પરિવાર સાથે આવવાનું છે. બરાબર !!” બધું એક જ શ્વાસમાં કહી નાખ્યું મેં, બસ ખાલી સામે થી હા આવે એની રાહ જોતો હતો.  ત્યાં જવાબ આવ્યો, “યાર નિલય, પેહલી વાત તો એ કે મને રસોઈ ફાવતી નથી. અને બીજું એ કે હું મુંબઈ છું”. એટલું કહી ને આશ્ચર્ય સાથે એ જરા હસ્યો. બે પળ માટે હું વિચારવા લાગ્યો આ ભાઈ મુંબઈ ક્યારે પહોંચી ગયો અને આવું કેમ બોલે છે?  મેં બધી વાત કહેલી છે એને, અને હવે એ કહે છે રસોઈ નથી ફાવતી? મારુ મૌન પારખી જઈ સામેથી અવાજ આવ્યો, “નિલય હું મહેશ ઠાકર બોલું છું, તારો કૉલેજનો મિત્ર. મને લાગે છે તેં ભૂલથી મને કોલ કર્યો છે.” અને એ ફરી હસવા લાગ્યો.

હું ક્ષોભમાં મુકાઈ ગયો. કદાચ એ મારી સામે હોત તો ચોક્કસ મારો ચેહરો જોઈ એ ફરી હસ્યો હોત. શું કામ ન હસે? એ તો એની જૂની આદત છે, ક્યારેય પણ સામે વાળી વ્યક્તિને એ સીધું કંઈ ન કહે પણ એ વાત ને હળવાશથી લઇ, હસીને લોકોને બોલતા બંધ કરી દેતો. લગભગ પાંચેક સેકન્ડના લાંબા મૌન પછી મેં કહ્યું , “ઓહ મહેશ, સૉરી ભાઈ ઓળખવામાં જરા ભૂલ થઈ ગઈ”. એણે કહ્યું “વાંધો નહિ એ બહાને વાત તો થઇ.” ફરી એક વાર શરમજનક લાગ્યું. મહેશ અને હું કોલેજમાં સાથે હતા, મિત્રો થી વધારે ભાઈ જેવા સંબંધ હતા. એકબીજા વગર કોલેજ જવું પણ ગમતું નહિ. એ જ ભાઈ સાથે આજે ભૂલમાં ફોન લગતા લગભગ બે વર્ષ પછી વાત થઇ. અલગ અલગ કંપનીમાં બંનેનું પ્લેસમેન્ટ થવાથી ખુબ રડવું આવ્યું હતું ત્યારે. પણ ધીમે ધીમે ક્યારે એ જ જીગરજાન દોસ્ત સાવ અજાણ બની માત્ર ફોનના કોન્ટેક્ટ લિસ્ટ સુધી સીમિત રહી ગયો તેની જાણ જ ન થઇ.

“મેં તને ઘણી વાર કોલ કરેલા, મારી મુંબઈમાં નોકરી લાગી એ વાત હું સૌ પ્રથમ તને કેહવા માંગતો હતો. પણ તારો જવાબ ન આવતા મને લાગ્યું તારો નંબર બદલાઈ ગયો હશે”. મહેશે કહ્યું. ભૂલ મારી હતી. નવા મિત્રો સાથે સંબંધ સાચવવા, જુના મિત્રોને સાવ ભૂલી ગયો હતો. “મહેશ, પેલા આપણા જુના અડ્ડા પર મળીએ.” બીજું કંઈ બોલી ન શક્યો હું. “Done” જવાબ આવ્યો સામેથી. “અને હા, મહેશ તારે મિતાની સગાઇ માં પહોંચી જવાનું છે, હું કોઈ પણ જાતનું બહાનું ચલાવી નહિ લઉં”. એટલું કેહતા એ બોલ્યો, “હવે ચાલ ચાલ ખોટી ફોર્માલિટી નહિ કર, ઓળખું છું તને હું. બેટા એકવાર મળ જો કેવો સીધો કરું તને…”

ફોન મુકતા જ વિચાર આવ્યો કે, આ મોબાઈલ ફોન પણ કેટલો સારો છે, ગમે એટલા નવા નંબર સેવ કરું, જુના નંબરને એ ક્યારે પણ ડિલેટ નથી કરતો મને પૂછ્યા વગર. બીજું કઈ નહિ તો કોલ કરતા રેહજો, કોને ખબર એક રોન્ગ નંબર ક્યારે સાચા વ્યક્તિ સાથે મળાવી દે.
